SLR lens mean a lot to photographer. I writing some review of different lens in this post.
For travel, I recommend to use big wide anger lens
18-55 mm lens: great focal length fo all purpose lens
10-22 mm lens: wide angle lens, fit lots pictures. It good for photograph hotell, city skylines.
70-200mm(and above): good for outdoor action photography, zooms so far in the back.
50 mm: lens does not zoom in or out mean you have to move in or out by your feet
